ICU Setup Cost in India: Equipment Budget for a 10-Bed ICU
Planning a new ICU or adding beds? This guide lists the equipment a 10-bed ICU needs under Indian guidelines, what each item costs, and the costs people forget.
Equipping a 10-bed ICU in India costs about Rs 70 lakh to Rs 2 crore for the main equipment and medical gas pipeline, or roughly Rs 7 lakh to Rs 20 lakh per bed, based on 2026 Indian price guides. Ventilators are the biggest item. Building work, air conditioning, staff and consumables are extra.
ICU Setup Cost at a Glance
The table below prices a typical 10-bed ICU (ISCCM Level II), using the equipment counts in the ISCCM 2020 consensus and price ranges from our own buying guides and a September 2026 Indian price list. Lower figures are good Indian brands; higher figures are premium imported models.
| Item | How many (10 beds) | Price each | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| ICU ventilator | 5 (half the beds) | Rs 7 lakh to Rs 22 lakh | Rs 35 lakh to Rs 1.1 crore |
| Non-invasive (BiPAP) ventilator | 3 (a quarter of beds) | Rs 1 lakh to Rs 3 lakh | Rs 3 lakh to Rs 9 lakh |
| Multipara patient monitor | 10 (one per bed) | Rs 40,000 to Rs 2.2 lakh | Rs 4 lakh to Rs 22 lakh |
| 5-function electric ICU bed | 10 | Rs 60,000 to Rs 90,000 | Rs 6 lakh to Rs 9 lakh |
| Syringe pump | 20 (two per bed) | Rs 12,000 to Rs 35,000 | Rs 2.4 lakh to Rs 7 lakh |
| Infusion pump | 10 (one per bed) | Rs 22,000 to Rs 96,000 | Rs 2.2 lakh to Rs 9.6 lakh |
| Medical gas pipeline (oxygen, air, vacuum, bed head panels) | 10 beds | Rs 1.2 lakh to Rs 2.2 lakh per bed | Rs 12 lakh to Rs 22 lakh |
| Blood gas (ABG) analyser | 1 | Rs 2.8 lakh to Rs 6 lakh | Rs 2.8 lakh to Rs 6 lakh |
| Defibrillator | 1 | Rs 1.6 lakh to Rs 3.5 lakh | Rs 1.6 lakh to Rs 3.5 lakh |
| 12-channel ECG machine | 1 | Rs 32,000 to Rs 1.3 lakh | Rs 32,000 to Rs 1.3 lakh |
| Crash cart | 1 | Rs 20,000 to Rs 64,000 | Rs 20,000 to Rs 64,000 |
| Portable suction unit | 2 | Rs 10,000 to Rs 24,000 | Rs 20,000 to Rs 48,000 |
| Total | About Rs 70 lakh to Rs 2 crore |
Per bed, that is about Rs 7 lakh to Rs 20 lakh. The biggest single choice is the ventilator: it can be half the whole budget.
What a 10-Bed ICU Needs
India’s critical care doctors (the ISCCM) published a consensus on ICU planning in 2020. For a Level II ICU, it suggests:
- Ventilators for about half the beds, and non-invasive (BiPAP) units for about a quarter.
- One multipara monitor per bed, ideally linked to a central station.
- Syringe pumps: 2 to 3 per bed. Infusion pumps: about 1 per bed.
- Gas outlets per bed: 2 oxygen, 1 to 2 vacuum and 1 to 2 compressed air.
- Power: many sockets per bed, with at least half on UPS backup.
- Shared items: a crash cart and defibrillator, ECG machine, blood gas analyser and portable suction.

Space and Staff Planning
- Space: at least 150 sq ft per open bed, or 200 to 250 sq ft for a single room, plus 100 to 150% more for support areas.
- Size: 8 to 12 beds per unit works best.
- How many ICU beds: at least 5% of the hospital’s beds, up to 25% in large tertiary hospitals.
- Nurses: one nurse per ventilated patient is ideal; one nurse for two or three less sick patients is acceptable.
- Doctors: one doctor should not look after more than five critically ill patients.
Costs People Forget
- Building and air conditioning. Civil work, flooring, isolation rooms and HVAC are outside the equipment budget. For scale, a 50-bed government critical care block in Rajamahendravaram was estimated at Rs 23.75 crore under PM-ABHIM.
- Oxygen source. The pipeline budget does not include an oxygen plant or manifold room.
- Consumables. Ventilator circuits, sensors, syringes and infusion sets are ongoing costs.
- Service. Plan for warranty and annual maintenance contracts on ventilators and monitors.
- Running cost. A 2021 AIIMS Bhubaneswar study found a surgical ICU bed cost about Rs 11,241 per day to run, with staff the largest share.
How to Reduce ICU Setup Cost
- Buy one ICU ventilator for every two beds, plus BiPAP units, instead of a ventilator for every bed.
- Use advanced monitors (with EtCO2) only where ventilated patients are, and mid-range monitors elsewhere.
- Choose 5-function electric beds for the ICU and 3-function beds for the step-down unit.
- Buy from one supplier for ventilators, monitors, pumps, beds and pipeline, so one team answers for installation and service.
- Check service response times and spare-part stock in your city before comparing prices.
Pulse ICU Equipment
Pulse supplies most of an ICU from one place: the ICU ventilator, 5 para and 7 para monitors, syringe and infusion pumps, ICU beds, the crash cart, ECG machines and the medical gas pipeline, with installation and service. For a whole hospital, see our hospital setup checklist.
