Day Care Surgery Centre Setup Cost in India: Equipment and Rules
Planning a day care surgery centre, or a day care wing in your hospital? This guide covers what counts as day care, the equipment list, what it costs for one or two OTs, and the space, staff and backup rules.
A day care surgery centre with 2 operation theatres and 8 recovery beds needs about Rs 26 lakh to Rs 98 lakh of equipment, by our estimate from 2026 Indian prices. A single-OT centre with 4 beds needs about Rs 13 lakh to Rs 55 lakh. Building or modular OT work, the licence and staff are extra.
What Is a Day Care Surgery Centre?
A day care surgery centre does planned operations where the patient goes home the same day. Cataract, hernia, piles, hair transplant, endoscopy and many small orthopaedic and gynaecology cases fit this model.
Under the Clinical Establishments Act, India's national council describes a Medical Day Care Facility as one where each patient stays at least 4 and at most 12 hours. It must have a referral agreement with a nearby hospital in case something goes wrong. Your state's own rules may add more, so check them before you plan.
Day Care Surgery Equipment List
Think of the centre in four parts: the operating room, recovery, sterilisation and patient movement.
| Area | Main equipment |
|---|---|
| Operating room | OT table, OT light, anaesthesia machine, patient monitor, cautery unit, suction, syringe and infusion pumps, instrument trolleys |
| Recovery (day beds) | Semi-Fowler beds or recovery trolleys, a monitor per bed, oxygen and suction at each bed |
| Emergency | Crash cart, defibrillator, resuscitation and intubation kit |
| Sterilisation | Autoclave, packing table, sterile store racks |
| Patient movement | Stretcher trolleys and wheelchairs |
| Gases | Medical gas pipeline to each OT and recovery bed |

What a Day Care Centre Costs
We built this estimate for a centre with 2 general OTs and 8 recovery beds. Prices come from our 2026 price guides, which list their own sources. They are usually before GST.
| Item | Number | Price each | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main OT equipment (table, light, anaesthesia, monitor, cautery, suction, pumps, crash cart, gas outlets) | 2 OTs | Rs 10 lakh to Rs 38 lakh per OT | Rs 20 lakh to Rs 76 lakh |
| Electric Semi-Fowler bed | 8 | Rs 20,000 to Rs 60,000 | Rs 1.6 lakh to Rs 4.8 lakh |
| 5 para monitor (recovery) | 8 | Rs 19,000 to Rs 40,000 | Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 3.2 lakh |
| Gas pipeline at recovery beds | 8 | Rs 25,000 to Rs 45,000 | Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3.6 lakh |
| Deluxe stretcher trolley | 2 | Rs 20,000 to Rs 35,000 | Rs 40,000 to Rs 70,000 |
| Horizontal autoclave | 1 | Rs 20,000 to Rs 10 lakh or more | Rs 20,000 to Rs 10 lakh |
| Equipment total | About Rs 26 lakh to Rs 98 lakh |
A smaller centre with 1 OT and 4 recovery beds, using the same prices, needs about Rs 13 lakh to Rs 55 lakh of equipment.
The anaesthesia machine and the autoclave move the total the most. Our anaesthesia guide puts basic machines, often used for day care, at Rs 3 lakh to Rs 6 lakh, against Rs 18 lakh or more for advanced workstations.
The building is extra. If you build modular OTs, our modular OT guide puts the room itself at about Rs 70 lakh to Rs 1.05 crore for a 36 square metre OT. Day care OTs are often 20 to 25 square metres, so the room can cost less.
Space, Staff and Backup Rules
There is no single national rule book for day care surgery centres. The national minimum standard for hair transplant centres, which must run a full day care surgical set-up, is a useful guide to what inspectors look for:
- OT size: at least 12 ft by 12 ft, with a complete OT set-up.
- Recovery: at least one post-operative bed for each OT, to watch patients after the procedure.
- Staff: at least one full-time doctor, one qualified nurse and one OT technician or assistant, with an anaesthetist on call.
- Emergency kit: a resuscitation kit, defibrillator, crash cart with intubation equipment, oxygen and emergency medicines.
- Backup: an agreement (MoU) with a hospital for emergencies, and a ventilator, resuscitation and monitor either in-house or through that agreement.
Most centres plan more than one recovery bed per OT, because patients stay a few hours before they go home. Size recovery for your busiest list of the day.
How to Plan and Save
- List the procedures you will do first. Eye, ENT, orthopaedic and endoscopy work each need different tables and lights.
- Choose a hydraulic OT table and a basic anaesthesia machine for short, simple cases; save the budget for monitoring.
- Use a hospital CSSD nearby for sterilising if your MoU allows it.
- Plan oxygen and suction at every recovery bed before the civil work.
- Ask for a service contract on every OT table, light, anaesthesia machine and monitor.
