A labour room with 4 delivery tables needs about Rs 2.7 lakh to Rs 24 lakh of core equipment, by our estimate from 2026 prices, plus focus lights. A small 2-table room needs about Rs 1.6 lakh to Rs 17.5 lakh. The choice of delivery table and autoclave moves the total the most. Building work is extra.

How Many Labour Tables Do You Need?

Start with your delivery load. The Government of India's labour room guidelines link the number of tables to deliveries per month.

Deliveries per monthLabour tables
Fewer than 201
20 to 992
100 to 1994 (conventional labour room)
200 to 4996 (conventional labour room)
500 or moreWorked out by formula, for LDR or conventional rooms

Most small nursing homes need one or two tables. A busy maternity hospital or district hospital needs four to six, or a set of LDR rooms. In an LDR (labour, delivery and recovery) room, the mother stays in one room from active labour until about 4 hours after birth.

Labour Room Equipment List

These are the main items, with the number the guidelines ask for. Where the guidelines are silent, we say so.

ItemHow many
Delivery (labour) tableOne per labour area
Focus or examination lightOne per labour table
Radiant warmer (newborn care area)One per 4 labour tables
Hand-held fetal DopplerOne per 4 tables, at least 2
Baby resuscitation bag and maskOne per 4 tables, at least 2
Autoclave (horizontal)1
Digital BP monitor, glucometer, baby weighing scale1 each
Oxygen cylinder or concentratorOne near the newborn care area
Wheelchairs and stretchers2 each in a CHC or sub-district hospital; 4 in a district hospital
CTG (fetal) monitorNot in the list; we suggest one per 2 tables in private hospitals
Electric suction machineThe list asks for mucus extractors; most hospitals also keep electric suction

Add a wall clock with a seconds hand in each labour room and newborn corner, a fridge for oxytocin and other drugs, and instrument trays for normal delivery.

What the Equipment Costs

We built this estimate for a conventional labour room with 4 tables, for about 100 to 199 deliveries a month. Prices are 2026 market ranges, usually before GST.

ItemNumberPrice eachTotal
Delivery table (hydraulic to electric)4Rs 25,000 to Rs 2 lakhRs 1 lakh to Rs 8 lakh
CTG monitor2Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 lakhRs 1 lakh to Rs 4 lakh
Fetal Doppler2Rs 1,500 to Rs 25,000Rs 3,000 to Rs 50,000
Radiant warmer1Rs 23,500 to Rs 75,000Rs 23,500 to Rs 75,000
Portable suction2Rs 10,000 to Rs 24,000Rs 20,000 to Rs 48,000
Horizontal autoclave1Rs 20,000 to Rs 10 lakh or moreRs 20,000 to Rs 10 lakh
Core equipment totalAbout Rs 2.7 lakh to Rs 24 lakh

Focus lights are extra. Mobile examination lights start at about Rs 11,000 each, so four add at least Rs 44,000. The total also leaves out small items such as the BP monitor, scales and delivery instrument sets.

For a small room with 2 tables, 1 CTG monitor, 2 Dopplers, 1 warmer, 1 suction unit and 1 autoclave, the same prices give about Rs 1.6 lakh to Rs 17.5 lakh.

Two choices move the total the most. A hydraulic delivery table costs a fraction of an electric one. A hospital with its own CSSD may not need a separate labour room autoclave at all.

For a government reference, Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation opened bids for CTG monitors in December 2024. Wired models were quoted at Rs 69,400 to Rs 1.23 lakh, and the two lowest wireless models at Rs 1.35 lakh and Rs 1.68 lakh, before GST.

Space and Layout Rules

Plan oxygen and suction points, power backup and air conditioning before the civil work starts. Moving them later costs far more.

Staff for a Labour Room

Staff nurses run most labour rooms. The guidelines ask for 4 staff nurses for each LDR unit: one for each shift and one as backup. In a district hospital, staff nurses conduct the normal deliveries, with an obstetrician, a trained medical officer and an anaesthetist on call for problems.

Private hospitals should also plan for a paediatrician on call at every birth that may need help, and a trained nurse for newborn care.

LaQshya and Quality Rules

LaQshya is the Ministry of Health's labour room quality programme, launched on 11 December 2017. It covers labour rooms and maternity operation theatres in government hospitals. It asks hospitals to lay out their labour rooms as per the standard guidelines and to follow safe birth checklists.

LaQshya is for government hospitals, but its layout and equipment norms are a good benchmark for any private labour room.
