Manual or Motorised: Which Should You Buy?
Some donors feel faint during or after giving blood. The quick fix is to tip the chair so the head is lower than the feet. How fast you can do this matters more than anything else.
- Motorised chairs move with a remote. The draft Indian standard asks for a one-touch button that tips the chair head-down at once for a faint or other emergency. They suit busy blood centres where staff run many chairs at the same time.
- Manual chairs cost far less and need no power. Staff must tip them by hand, so check that this is quick and easy. They suit camps, small blood centres and places with power cuts.
- Gas spring chairs sit in the middle. They are easy to move by hand and still need no power.
We suggest motorised chairs for the main collection room of a busy centre, and manual or gas spring chairs for camps and back-up.

What to Check Before You Buy
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has a draft standard for blood donor couches (MHD 12, July 2023). It is a draft, not a final rule, but it is a good checklist.
| Feature | Draft BIS guide |
|---|---|
| Weight limit | Up to 150 kg; tested with 300 kg of sandbags for 15 minutes |
| Positions | Flat, sitting and head-down (Trendelenburg), with a tilt of at least 8° to 10° |
| Back rest | 0° to 70° |
| Seat | 0° to 20° |
| Leg rest | 0° to 30° |
| Arm rests | Both arms adjust in height and position; padded, about 500 × 200 mm |
| Padding | Soft PU foam, 60 to 100 mm thick |
| Cover | Washable, liquid proof, flame resistant and treated against germs |
| Wheels | Four lockable wheels |
| Size (guide only) | About 1,800 to 1,900 mm long when flat and 900 mm wide |
| Electric models | Meet IEC 60601-1 safety rules; 220–240 V; motors housed inside; fuse or breaker |
Also ask for the user manual, the cleaning method, the warranty and how fast the supplier can fix a motor or remote.
Donor Chair vs Phlebotomy and Dialysis Chairs
- Phlebotomy chair: for taking a few tubes of blood in a lab. It often sits upright and may not recline, so it is not right for a full donation.
- Blood donor chair: for a full donation and a short rest after it. It must recline and tip head-down fast.
- Dialysis chair: for dialysis sessions that last several hours, so it often adds more padding, side tables and often more motors. Listings run from about Rs 42,000 for manual to Rs 1.3 lakh for electric. See our dialysis unit setup cost guide.
How Many Donor Chairs Do You Need?
India's blood centre rules (Schedule F, Part XII-B of the Drugs Rules) do not set a number of chairs. They ask for donor beds and chairs that are well padded and the right size, plus beds where donors can rest.
For camps, the same rules plan one doctor and two nurses or phlebotomists for every 6 to 8 donor tables. Such a team can see about 50 to 70 donors in 3 hours. We suggest planning chairs to match your staff: 6 to 8 chairs for each team, plus one or two spare for donors who need to lie down longer.
The rules also ask for 10 square metres for apheresis, where a machine takes only platelets or plasma. Those donors sit for longer, so a motorised chair helps there.
Donor Rules That Shape the Chair
India's national donor rules say a donor must be 18 to 65 years old and weigh at least 45 kg. Blood centres take 350 ml from donors of 45 kg and 450 ml from donors over 55 kg. Men can give every 90 days and women every 120 days. A 150 kg chair covers almost every donor you will see.
Pulse Blood Donor Chair

Pulse can also plan the whole collection room, along with beds, trolleys and monitors, as part of a hospital setup order. For prices on other items, see our hospital equipment list.

Blood Donor Chair Price: FAQs
What is the price of a blood donor chair in India?
Online listings checked in November 2026 show manual blood donor chairs at about Rs 9,800 to Rs 27,000 and motorised ones at about Rs 76,000 to Rs 90,000. Premium couches are listed at Rs 1.5 to 1.7 lakh.
Is a motorised blood donor chair worth it?
For a busy blood centre, yes. A motor lets staff tip a fainting donor head-down with one button. For camps and small centres, a manual or gas spring chair costs far less and needs no power.
What weight should a blood donor chair hold?
The draft BIS standard asks for a chair that holds up to 150 kg and passes a test with 300 kg of sandbags for 15 minutes.
How many donor chairs does a blood centre need?
The rules do not set a number. At camps they plan one doctor and two nurses for 6 to 8 donor tables. We suggest matching chairs to staff, plus one or two spare.
What is the difference between a phlebotomy chair and a blood donor chair?
A phlebotomy chair is for taking a few tubes of blood and may not recline. A blood donor chair reclines fully and can tip head-down fast if a donor feels faint.
