How Much Does an Instrument Trolley Cost?

An instrument trolley is a small table on wheels that holds sterile instruments and supplies near the surgeon or nurse. Price depends on the steel, the number of shelves and the finish.

Instrument Trolley vs Mayo Trolley

We suggest planning at least one instrument trolley and one Mayo trolley for each OT table. Wards, dressing rooms and the emergency department need their own.

SS 304 vs Cheaper Steel

Not all stainless steel is the same. SS 304 has at least 18% chromium and 8% nickel, so it resists rust and strong disinfectants. It is the usual choice for OTs. Cheaper grades such as SS 201 rust more easily and suit general wards better. Nickel prices move the cost of SS 304 up and down.

The GeM listing below asks for non-magnetic stainless steel. SS 304 is usually non-magnetic, so a magnet is a quick first check, but not proof. Ask the seller to state the grade on the invoice.

What to Check Before You Buy

A GeM listing for an SS 304 instrument trolley shows the specs a good trolley should meet:

Size680 mm long, 450 mm wide, 820 mm high
Shelves2, made of 1.6 mm non-magnetic SS sheet
Shelf edgesBent 25 mm, so instruments do not slide off

RailingsOn three sides of each shelf
Castors4 heavy-duty swivel castors, 100 mm rubber wheels
