AV Fistula Needle Price in India: Gauges, Features and Cost per Year
Running a dialysis unit? This guide covers what AV fistula needles cost in 2026, how gauge matches blood flow, and what to check before you buy in bulk.
AV fistula needles cost about Rs 24 to Rs 30 per pair (one arterial and one venous needle) in boxes of 250 to 350 pairs, GST included (Medikabazaar, November 2026). Each haemodialysis session uses one pair. A patient on dialysis three times a week uses about 156 pairs a year.
What is an AV fistula needle?
An AV (arteriovenous) fistula is a vein in the arm joined to an artery. Over a few weeks it grows large and strong enough for dialysis. At each session, staff put two needles into it.
- The arterial needle takes blood to the dialysis machine.
- The venous needle returns the cleaned blood.
Each needle has plastic wings to hold it, a short tube, a clamp and a connector for the blood lines. Most are sold as a twin set: one arterial and one venous needle in one pack.
How much does an AV fistula needle cost in India?
Bulk boxes bring the price down to about Rs 24 to Rs 30 per pair.
| Listing (Medikabazaar, Nov 2026) | Gauge | Box | Box price | Per pair |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed-wing twin set | 16G | 250 pairs | Rs 7,560 (GST incl.) | About Rs 30 |
| Disposable twin set | 17G | 350 pairs | Rs 8,489 (GST incl.) | About Rs 24 |
Buying in small lots costs more. Our dialyser and consumables guide uses a per-session estimate of about Rs 45 to Rs 75 a pair.

Which needle gauge is used for dialysis?
Gauge is the needle's width. A smaller number means a wider needle, which lets more blood flow. The gauge must match the blood flow the doctor prescribes.
| Gauge | Blood flow it suits | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 17G | 200 to 250 mL/min | First uses of a new fistula; low flow |
| 16G | 250 to 350 mL/min | Established fistulas |
| 15G | 350 to 450 mL/min | Mature fistulas with higher flow |
| 14G | Above 450 mL/min | High-flow access |
These ranges come from US National Kidney Foundation teaching material based on the KDOQI 2019 guideline. It also says the pressure before the blood pump should not be more negative than -250 mmHg. A needle that is too thin for the flow creates too much suction on the access.
A Nipro product guide (2023) says the first few uses of a new fistula should be with a 17G needle. The final choice is always made by the nephrologist and dialysis team. Follow the IFU and your unit's protocol.
Features to check
- Back eye: an extra side hole near the tip. It helps steady blood flow and lowers the chance of the needle sucking against the vessel wall. It is most useful on the arterial needle.
- Fixed or rotating wings: rotating wings let staff turn the needle after it goes in. Fixed wings are simpler.
- Colour-coded wings: each gauge has its own colour, so staff can tell them apart fast.
- Needle length: it should suit how deep the fistula lies.
- Tubing and clamp: soft tubing that does not kink, and a clamp that shuts fully.
- Sterilisation and shelf life: gamma or ETO, with the expiry date clear on every pack.
How many needles does a dialysis unit need?
One pair is used per session and then thrown away. So the number of pairs equals the number of fistula sessions.
- One patient, three sessions a week: about 156 pairs a year, or about Rs 3,800 to Rs 4,700 at bulk prices.
- One patient, two sessions a week: about 104 pairs a year.
- Every 1,000 fistula sessions: 1,000 pairs, or about Rs 24,000 to Rs 30,000.
Not every patient uses a fistula. In a survey of Indian nephrologists (Bansal and others, 2018), most said more than three-quarters of patients start dialysis with a catheter. Among patients on regular dialysis, more than half used a fistula. So count fistula patients, not total patients, when you order. Patients on a catheter need a haemodialysis catheter instead.
Buying checklist
- Stock all three common gauges (15G, 16G and 17G), with and without back eye.
- Ask for the CDSCO licence and the sterility certificate for each batch.
- Check expiry dates on delivery. Order in amounts you will use well before expiry.
- Let staff try a sample box before a large order. Grip, sharpness and tubing feel matter.
- Buy needles, blood tubing and dialysers from one supplier if you can, so the connections fit.
Pulse PD-Canova fistula needles
PD-Canova is the Pulse AV fistula needle twin set (arterial and venous). It comes in 15G, 16G and 17G, with or without a back-eye needle. Sets are sterilised by gamma or ETO and packed 50 sets inside, 500 sets outside.
Pulse also supplies the PDM-6000 haemodialysis machine, dialysers, PD-Linepro blood tubing, PD-Cath catheters and PD-TP transducer protectors. That covers dialysis units in small clinics and large hospitals. Prices are on quote.

AV Fistula Needle Price in India: FAQs
What is the price of an AV fistula needle in India?
In boxes of 250 to 350 pairs, AV fistula needles cost about Rs 24 to Rs 30 per pair, GST included (Medikabazaar, November 2026). Small lots cost more, about Rs 45 to Rs 75 a pair.
Which fistula needle gauge is used for dialysis?
It depends on the prescribed blood flow. As a guide, 17G suits about 200 to 250 mL/min, 16G about 250 to 350 mL/min and 15G about 350 to 450 mL/min. The nephrologist sets the gauge for each patient.
Which gauge is used for a new fistula?
The first few uses of a new fistula are usually with a 17G needle, the thinnest common size. Staff then move to a wider needle as the fistula matures, following the unit protocol and the nephrologist.
What is a back-eye fistula needle?
A back-eye needle has an extra side hole near the tip. It helps keep blood flow steady and lowers the chance of the needle sucking against the vessel wall. It is mostly used as the arterial needle.
How many fistula needles does a dialysis patient use in a year?
One pair per session. A patient on dialysis three times a week uses about 156 pairs a year, and twice a week about 104 pairs. At bulk prices that is about Rs 3,800 to Rs 4,700 a year for three sessions a week.
Does Pulse supply AV fistula needles?
Yes. Pulse PD-Canova fistula needle twin sets come in 15G, 16G and 17G, with or without back eye, sterilised by gamma or ETO. Pulse also supplies the dialysis machine, dialysers, blood tubing and catheters. Message +91 90711 01108 for a quote.
